HOD’s Welcome Address
The Department of Estate Management in the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is among the first set of Departments in the Nigerian Universities offering Estate Management as a programme in the country. Since its establishment as a Sub-Department under the then Department of Economics in 1970, the Department has made tremendous contributions to real estate education, particularly with respect to improving real estate investment decision making, valuation and appraisal practices, land policy and management as well as property/housing and urban development policies, among others, in the country through teaching and research publications. The Department offers B.Sc., PGD, M.Sc. (by research), MPhil. and Ph.D. programmes. A Master of Real Estate Business (MREB) Executive part time programme is also on offer.
The Department is privileged to have one of the best staff complement among the Departments running Estate Management in Nigeria; comprising 2 Emeritus Professors, 9 Professors, 3 Readers, 3 Senior Lecturers, and 8 Lecturers assisting the Chief Examiner and senior academics in addition to 2 technical and 3 administrative members of staff. The Department’s B.Sc. degree is one of the few Estate Management Programmes that have full accreditation of the Estate Surveyors and Valuers’ Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) (the body that regulates the practice of Estate Management and Valuation in Nigeria), and the National University Commission (NUC). The Department of Estate Management, Obafemi Awolowo University was ranked as the best in Nigeria and indeed the whole of Africa by Edurank in 2025. Edurank is a foremost website that provides rankings and reviews of educational institutions including universities and colleges globally. The Department has 7 Fellows of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, of which 6 Professors were recently inducted into the Fellowship cadre of the institution.
